INTRODUCTION
The Ohio Statistics Conference was initiated in 1984 by the Department
of Statistics, Ohio State University. Now, it rotates annually to all
regions of the state. One of the objectives of this meeting is to gather
statistical scientists in Ohio academia, government and industry to learn
about recent developments in Statistics. However, the primary goal is to
attract quantitatively strong undergraduate students to our profession by
enhancing their interest in pursuing graduate programs in Statistical
Science in the State of Ohio. We hope that faculty members will encourage
students with strong quantitative skills, not just mathematics majors, to
attend the conference to explore opportunities for graduate studies in
Statistics.
KEYNOTE ADDRESS
Visualization and Exploration of Statistical Data
David W. Scott
Scott is Professor and former Chair of Statistics at Rice University.
He is 1998 Joint Statistical Meetings Program Chair for Dallas, and the
former President of the ASA Statistical Graphics Section. He is co-editor
of Computational Statistics and Statistical Science, and past Associate
Editor of JASA and AOS. He is the author of "Multivariate Density
Estimation" and a Fellow of ASA, IMS, AAAS, and ISI.
His talk will examine ways in which statisticians are exploiting
advanced visualization techniques to explore multivariate data for
structure. Basic tools such as scatter plots and histograms will be woven
into new tools such as the Density Grand Tour (DGT). A videotape
demonstrating the DGT running on a Silicon Graphics Workstation with real
data will be presented. The work will be related to statistical problems
in clustering and detection.
