Artificial Neural Networks and Applications in Biomedical Research

Roger A. Bielefeld

Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Case Western Reserve University

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have gained renewed popularity as a means for the construction of predictive models. In particular, ANNs have frequently been used as the basis for predictive models in in clinical medicine. An overview of ANN technology will be presented, primarily from the point of an engineer rather than that of a statistician. Some examples of published ANN-based models in medical applications will be presented. Finally, an in-depth example of an ANN-based predictive model for an application at University Hospitals of Cleveland will be presented.
