The State of Statistical Process Control:
Where We Are and Where We Should be
Tom Ryan
Department of Statistics, CWRU
It is sometimes said that there is a large gap between the state
of the art of statistical process control (SPC) and the use of
SPC by practitioners. This issue will be examined and possible
future directions of SPC will be discussed. The talk will be
based in part on a review paper coauthored by the speaker that
will appear in the Journal of the American Statistical
Association. The talk will also be based in part on a paper,
"Controversies and Contradictions in Statistical Process
Control", that will appear in the Journal of Quality Technology,
for which the speaker is a discussant.
